SEMINAR: EARLY CHILDHOOD, MENTAL HEALTH & MEDIA,

Maastricht, 24-26 June 2007

A good start to life is crucial. Despite its importance, there is relatively little attention paid to early childhood in the media. Media could be effective in spreading information to parents, teachers, caregivers and policy makers about what a healthy and well-balanced early childhood requires. It could contribute to building a stronger society able to deal with the demands of the future.

The Seminar on Early Childhood Development, Mental Health and Media was organized in Maastricht, Netherlands in 2007. The participants shared experiences drawn from professional involvement in child psychiatry, academic research, education, theatre, broadcasting, child care, social welfare and media training in, among others, The Netherlands, the UK, Surinam, Brazil, Costa Rica, Trinidad, Kenya, Uganda, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. At the conclusion of their discussions, they drew up guidelines for various aspects of attracting and producing media coverage of early childhood development.
